Kaizer Chiefs Middendorp versus Baxter winning season

For five years the mighty Kaizer Chiefs have been lying dormant waiting to rise again and lift the Premier Soccer League title. In the 2019/20 season after playing just 15 games Kaizer Chiefs FC are top of the log table and lead second placed Mamelodi Sundowns by 4 points. Coach Middendorp has changed the way Kaizer Chiefs plays and the team is offensively looking very good and scoring from set pieces, a mark of a good team! However, they have been conceding silly goals of late costing them crucial points.

Chiefs last won the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in 2014/15 season. One thing to admire from the winning team of 2014/15 was their defense, shepherded by brilliant Stuart Baxter. Coach Stuart Baxter's team only conceded 14 goals the entire season. Remarkably Meddendorp's team has conceded 13 goals in 15 games. This clearly shows signs of a leaking defense and casts doubts in the minds of Amakhosi fans if their team will be able to win the league with 15 games remaining.

In comparison to Baxter's team, Middendorp's team has lost 2 games in half the games of the 2019/20 season while Baxter's team only lost 2 games the entire season. Although Chiefs are sitting 4 points clear of the ABSA Premier Soccer League, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits are hot on their heels, signaling a mouthwatering finish of the PSL season 2019/20.

However, the most concerning clear point is lack of pace of the Chiefs defense, noted by coach Tinkler, Lehlogonolo Seema and Rhulani Mokwena. A strategy the rest of the teams in the PSL will look to exploit in the second half of the season. Inexperienced young fullbacks have also cost them dearly due to a disjointed defense, young fullbacks overlapping all the time and not providing centre backs with cover or holding their positions. Additionally, protection from the Middlefield has also not been of a high standard, with Willard Katsande showing signs of aging - Playing well below the level we have seen in past seasons!

Kaizer Chiefs have until midnight of the 31st of January 2020 to fix their leaking defense, when they transfer window will be open. Who can Kaizer Chiefs sign to solidify their defense? Please leave your comments below.
