Paul Rothmans Cup Dolezar one of the best foreign coaches to coach in SA
Who is Paul Dolezar? Paul Dolezar was once a coach of the mighty Amakhosi and Mamelodi Sundowns. In his short spells coaching in South Africa (SA) he managed to win the Rothmans cup 3 times, a league title with Mamelodi Sundowns, and in 2005 the SAA Supa 8 with Bloemfontein Celtic FC which had not won a cup in 20 years.
The late Serbian national began his playing career in Yugoslavia and then finished in France. Pavle Dolezar did not have a glittering playing career; he spent most of his playing career playing in the lower leagues. He played as a left middle fielder throughout his career, and his greatest achievement as a player is when he helped Proleter gain promotion to the first division in Yugoslavia. He played for Yugoslavia national team; he played against the likes of France, Russia, and Bulgaria to name a few. Dolezar played all across Europe; France, Belgium, Yugoslavia, and in the Netherlands. The Serbian had only one season of top flight football in the Eredivisie playing for GA Eagles.
When retired from playing, he went straight into coaching. He coached in France in the early part of his coaching career. He then made a move to Africa where he coached in Garbon, Morocco, and South Africa. According to Neil Tovey in his book, before he came to South Africa Dolezar was a successful coach having 3 titles in a row in Garbon with AS Sogara. In South Africa, he won 3 Rothmans cup titles more than any other coach before the tournament was replaced by the Coca-Cola cup and is now currently known as the Telkom Cup.
Besides his success, he became known as a controversial figure in SA football with his comments about his players and about other teams being overboard. However, he made football entertaining because of his sometimes funny comments. The media loved him and fans but the players hated him especially those he made comments against.
In 2001, Mamelodi Sundown lost to Kaizer Chiefs in the final of the Bob Save Super Bowl sparking the above malicious comments by Dolezar. Dolezar was implying that Kaizer Chiefs bought the referees. He followed the above comment with another malicious comment, "I have been with Chiefs for 2 years and I know what I am talking about". Dolezar found himself in hot water for his comments and was recommended he appear before PSL disciplinary committee to explain his comments.
"As the technical director I am at training to observe and I do that in my tracksuit. I only put on a suit when I go out with my wife.", Paul Dolezar.
Serbian coach was demoted from Mpumalanga Black Aces to Technical director after winning only 1 game out of 9. When the journalist probed Dolezar for his response about his new role as a technical director he responded with the above comments after he had been seen in the training ground wearing a tracksuit.

In 1998, in a game against Kaizer Chiefs and Pirates; Doctor Khumalo missed a seater and it drove Dolezar crazy especially because they lost the derby to Pirates by a solitary goal. If Doctor scored the scores would have been level and the game would have been drawn instead of lost. After the match, missiles were thrown at Dolezar by the Kaizer Chiefs fans sparking Dolezar comment when he was asked by the media why they lost the derby.

Contreversial Comments

Paul Dolezar's coaching style is similar to no one else. He is always screaming on the touchline for every minute of the game. One thing is clear about the coach, he wanted to win all the games he played. His prematch interviews were always controversial when he lost.

In 2001, Mr. Rothman's cup was asked to appear before PSL disciplinary committee for his comments made about Kaizer Chiefs after he lost the bob save super bowl final.
In 2011, Dolezar was in charge of Mpumalanga Black Aces where he won one match out of a possible 9 matches. The same year Mpumalanga Black Aces got relegated and he was demoted to technical director at the club after only 9 matches.
